As a second-grade teacher with a lot of experience, I’ve seen my fair share of fun show-and-tell times. But the story of one kid that I will never forget still makes me smile. A smart and friendly young girl named Erica took the spotlight with a pillow under her sweater and a picture of her little brother Luke.
The class was enthralled, and I had to work hard not to laugh. It was hilarious to see Erica’s cartoon reenactment of her mom’s labour. She showed how uncomfortable her mum was, imitated the “middle wife” (the delivery nurse), and even showed how exciting the birth was.
What a great story Erica told! The “bag of water” that suddenly burst, the “yucky stuff” from her mom’s “play-center,” and the middle wife’s harsh warning to Luke for “crawling up in there” in the first place were just a few examples.
When Erica finished her story with a triumphant bow, the whole class exploded in cheers. I joined in, thankful for the lesson of how much joy childhood innocence and creativity can bring.
Erica’s “Middle Wife” story taught me that day to always be ready for the unexpected. Now, I never go to a show-and-tell event without my camera, looking forward to the next funny or touching moment.
